Following the Reefer Explosions which took place in 2011, the COA has been acting as an information platform for data relating to Counterfeit Refrigerant Gases and Contaminated Refrigeration Machinery.
To permit a useful interchange of information within the industry, the COA organised five Reefer Forums between November 2011 and June 2012, where the issues have been reviewed and discussed.

Reefers Updates
As part of its 12th Members Meeting in Shanghai on 7 May 2013, the COA organised a Reefer Forum where delegates were updated on the work being done to reduce the use of counterfeit refrigerants in container reefer machinery.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) held a conference entitled “Advancing Ozone and Climage Protection Technologies - Next Steps" at the UNEP headquarters in Bangkok from 21 to 23 July 2012. Following the UN Ozone group meeting in Bhutan in May where the COA presented the position of the shipping industry in respect of fake refrigerant contamination, the COA was invited to attend a panel discussion on the same subject at this conference.

As part of its 9th Members Meeting, the COA organised a Reefer Forum in Seoul on 12 June 2012. This was followed by a Demonstration of Refrigerant Gas Bottle Testing methods and Refrigerant Extraction and Testing methods.
